Without getting into spoilers, 13 Sentinels is about teenagers who can pilot giant time-travelling mechs trying to save humanity. Yes. This game has thirteen protagonists and time travel. Understandably, this is going to be a bit of a confusing story at first.

  1. You are thrown into the story, and you *will* be confused at first.
  2. But, as the story goes on, bits and pieces of the plot and the underlying mysteries at the heart of the conflict get unveiled.
  3. I have audibly gasped and shouted in surprise at some of the reveals.
  4. The combat is good as well, but honestly, the story is where this game shines.

The game is aesthetically beautiful as well, with a fairly unique animation style. I can’t speak for the English voice acting, but the Japanese voice work is also stellar. I cannot recommend this game enough. If you love visual novels, you need 13 Sentinels in your library.

It is quite possibly the greatest piece of non-linear sci-fi storytelling in gaming history. I got my Switch physical copy today, and while I don’t have a ton of time into it, nothing is lost on the Switch version.

Yes, it is mostly a visual novel, which normally isn’t my thing, however it plays out in a way that is reminiscent of a graphic adventure of old (think Maniac Mansion, Secret of Monkey Island, etc etc), only admittedly a lot more basic. I am not into visual novels.

  • But this is an exception.
  • The story starts out completely confusing, but as the 13 characters’ stories intertwine and develop spanning time and space, the big picture slowly unfolds until you get it.
  • This is a game you don’t want to start, get a ways into, and then take a pause for any lengthy period of time.

It is a complex but extremely rewarding story. Mixed into the VN aspect of the game is a tower defense portion (I love tower defense games). It’s relatively simplistic, but very fun. It may not be for everyone. The English voice acting is top tier and perfect.

  • Even if you might normally like playing games in the native language, this is one I would say you should try in English.
  • The graphics really need no introduction.
  • Signature Vanillaware hand drawn art.
  • Absolutely beautiful.
  • Please don’t read any spoilers or guides and jump into this blind.
  • Don’t spoil your first opportunity to experience the story, because as others have said in other places: “I wish I could just forget the game and play it again for the first time”.

To flesh out each of those sections you have branching pathways during the story driven sections and an upgrade system for the real time strategy section. Strangely it all really works well together. With a huge and diverse cast to play through (each with their own story, motives and goals) and an amazing art style it’s a really compelling story to unfold.

These are some of the most impressive 2D visuals I’ve ever seen in a Switch game, and it really complements the unique story hook. I won’t spoil anything, so if you’re interested in Mechs, Alien Invasions or Time travel, definitely give this one a look. Owners of the PS4 edition of Vanillaware’s 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim will be getting an upgrade in a few months. An announcement from publisher Atlus confirmed that the original PS4 version of the game will receive a patch to bring it to parity with the recently released Nintendo Switch edition,

Though the games are narratively identical, the Switch edition adds two extra weapon options to each of the playable Sentinel units. The additional weapons diversify the options available to players and give each character some unique gimmicks. The patch will also add the English voice option to the PS4 version.

Though overseas versions of 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim shipped in 2020 with both English and Japanese voice options, the original 2019 Japanese PS4 release did not. The Switch version had both, and the inclusion of English voices was listed as a selling point in promotional material. Thus the patch should make the PS4 edition content-identical to the Switch edition.

In addition to the patch, Atlus will release a “Welcome Value Pack” bundle for the game in Japan. This is a rerelease of the game at a lower price point. It bundles in some additional digital goodies like a digital art book, posters, a PS4 theme, and an Avatar set.

There are a few assets that are lower quality, but I had to zoom into the screenshots to really compare which should give you a good idea of how good this port is on the Switch. 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim zoomed in on Switch docked (left) and PS4 version (right) showing difference in 3D asset quality and depth of field In the combat parts that I’m allowed to talk about for this preview, I noticed the buildings in the environment are lower fidelity across the board as shown in the comparison above.

  • Even some of the effects seem a bit lower quality alongside some post-processing compared to the PS4 version like depth of field.
  • Overall, I’m very pleased with this conversion so far.
  • When it comes to load times, while the PS4 version had instant loading when I played it, the Nintendo Switch port so far is no slouch.

There is a slight delay in loading certain things compared to the PS4 version, but 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is super responsive and quick when you want to launch it and get into your save after playing something else or when you turn your console on. It definitely has been optimized well here. As of now, I’m most curious to see how the Switch handles the combat scenarios in the later parts of the game since even the PS4 Pro struggled with a few situations. I’ll have a full 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim Switch review closer to release. Until then, I’m very impressed with how Vanillaware and Atlus have brought over the game to Nintendo’s hybrid system.

The Nintendo Switch port of the Vanillaware sci-fi adventure game, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, was released last week on April 14, 2022, and sales tracker Famitsu reports that 27,199 physical copies were sold during the first week. This Famitsu estimated sales data for 13 Sentinels in Japan are of sales ranging from April 11 to April 17, 2022.

Having sold 27,199 copies on the Switch in Japan, this represents 7,409 copies less than the original PS4 release in November 2019, which sold 34,608 units at launch. Debuting with underwhelming sales on the PS4 that disappointed the developers, 13 Sentinels went on to surpass expectations with strong word of mouth.

Two months after its initial release in Japan, in January 2020, the game had reached 100k copies shipped (digital copies included). Three months later in April 2020, it reached 130k copies shipped in Japan, and 200k copies 17 months later in September 2021.

    Does mk11 run well on the Switch?

    ‘Mortal Kombat 11’ Xbox One, PS4 And Switch Comparison: Performance Is A Knockout ‘Mortal Kombat 11’ Credit: Digital Foundry The simultaneous release of Mortal Kombat 11 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Switch provides an opportunity to examine technical performance across a broad range of current generation console hardware.

    Digital Foundry crunched the numbers. Here’s what they found. Resolution and visual quality Resolution differs widely across the consoles as expected when you’re looking at hardware as powerful as the Xbox One X and as limited as the Switch. Resolution also changes as you play because MK11 makes use of dynamic resolution scaling on all consoles.

    Prerendered content such as cutscenes, fatal blows, and opening moves tend to render at higher resolutions than gameplay. Here are the highest resolutions Digital Foundry observed for the Xbox and PlayStation consoles. This is when MK11 looks its best.

    No real surprises here. Things get more interesting when you look at resolution differences during gameplay. The table below shows the highs and lows produced by dynamic scaling for all the consoles. Digital Foundry didn’t observe any dynamic scaling on the PS4. They reported that the low for the One S was just below 900p without giving further details.

    Not even the mighty One X can produce native 4K during gameplay although it’s worth noting that the One X at its worst is substantially better than any of the other consoles at their best. Resolution comparison between the Xbox One X and the Switch in docked mode.

    Credit: Digital Foundry There’s a substantial—and in the case of undocked play, extreme—decline in resolution on the Switch. On the one hand, lower resolution on the Switch is expected given its limited hardware. On the other, the loss in resolution is really stark. Mortal Kombat 11 just doesn’t look very good on the Switch although the small handheld screen offsets the poor resolution to some extent when playing in undocked mode.

    Visual quality outside of resolution is fairly consistent across the Xbox and PlayStation consoles. The major difference lies in increased pixilation and banding on motion blur effects on the One S and PS4. However, the action in MK11 is so fast it’s unlikely you’ll notice.

    1. The Switch is a different story.
    2. Nintendo’s console uses noticeably lower resolution textures.
    3. Particle and fire effects that contribute quite a bit to MK11 ‘s intense combat are markedly curtailed or completely absent.
    4. Background art is often missing, and motion blur isn’t there at all.
    5. Prerendered content drops to 30 fps.

    Credit: Digital Foundry Performance Frame rate is usually much more important than resolution or visual quality for fast-paced action games like Mortal Kombat 11, MK11 sets the bar high by targeting 60 fps on all consoles and it nails it most of the time.

    • The Xbox and PlayStation consoles all lock on 60 fps during gameplay and drop to 30 fps during prerendered content.
    • This is quite an achievement as it’s rare to see the lowly One S stand toe-to-toe with its big brother in frame rate comparisons.
    • Performance on the Switch is much better than you might expect.

    When docked, the Switch sticks to 60 fps most of the time for most combat encounters. The only exception Digital Foundry observed was the fight between Sub-Zero and Scorpion where there were noticeable dips into the range between 50 and 60 fps. Undocked doesn’t do quite as well coming in between 45 and 60 fps during the Sub-Zero and Scorpion match.

    • Otherwise, it sticks to 60 fps most of the time.
    • Like the other consoles, the Switch drops to 30 fps for prerendered content.
    • Unlike the other consoles, frame rate occasionally drops a little bit below 30 fps and there are frame time aberrations that produce some visual judder.
    • Fighting at 60 fps almost all the time on all the consoles is a welcome surprise.

    Credit: Digital Foundry Conclusion The conclusions here are straightforward. Mortal Kombat 11 looks best on the One X which is as it should be. Every cross-platform title looks best on the One X unless the developer failed to make the most of each console’s hardware.

    MK11 looks okay on the Switch if you haven’t seen it on the other consoles. If you have, you’ll realize how much you’re missing. If you’re playing on a TV¸ the docked Switch is not a good choice. However, the poor visuals and low resolution when playing undocked are at least partially offset by the Switch’s small screen.

    Frame rate usually trumps visuals for fast-paced action games and this is where Mortal Kombat 11 shines. All the consoles lock on 60 FPS during gameplay most of the time. The Switch is the real surprise here. It handles 60 fps almost as well as it’s much more powerful brethren.

If you’re travelling, you’ll most likely need to find a charging point more quickly for the Steam Deck than the Switch: even flat out, the Switch is usually good for around four and a bit hours between charges while the Steam Deck’s quoted 2 to 8-hour life is closer to the 2 if you’re really hammering it.

    But again, it’s really about the games. While the Steam Deck doesn’t run every Steam game – some multiplayer titles’ anti-cheat systems don’t work with the Steam Deck because it uses the Linux operating system – it runs the vast majority, and the Steam library is absolutely massive. Nintendo’s selection is much smaller and largely, but not exclusively, tends to skew towards more colourful, family-friendly fare.

    So which is better? There’s no easy answer to that. The Nintendo Switch is the better console if you want to play Nintendo Switch games, and the Steam Deck is the better console if you want to play Steam games. They’re very different devices designed for very different kinds of gamer, and they’re both very good at what they do.

  2. There is no overworld to explore you just go from one mission to the next.
  3. There are story missions and free mission.
  4. It feels like the free missions are forced upon you because of how much the level spikes to each story mission.
  5. Eventually it feels like you’ll hit a wall in story mission and you’ll need to grind your level up.

I would have liked to enjoy the story more freely than that however fighting against the odds is what is fun about tactics games. The strategy to overcome an obstacle. So while there are points where you will need to get a few levels to even the game a bit it is not anything deal breaking.

People who love playing role playing-strategy game like Ogre battles and Tactic Ogre will like give it a try on this games. Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2018 I bought this game for $39.99. It is a compilation of the Mercenaries Saga games that were previously on mobile (to my knowledge) and the Nintendo 3DS (except one of them.

  • In any case, the game can be purchased digitally on the Nintendo Switch eShop for $14.99.
  • I like to buy physical games so I can sell them if I no longer want them.
  • But I can’t really recommended this one.
  • The box art is nice for what it is and the inside cover has a battle scene from the game.

Nothing more. I can’t justify paying an extra $25 for this package especially when I ended up not caring much for the game. It is a turn based strategy game and looked a little bit like Final Fantasy Tactics for the GBA. Unfortunately, I found the game to be uninspiring for me.

These high school students come from different eras and backgrounds but unite together aboard their sentinels to defeat the Deimos threat.13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is a fantastic game.

  • The story is incredibly written, with revelations around every turn and loveable characters, the stunning, hand-drawn, 2D visuals are incredibly charming, and battles rely on quick thinking and preparing for future waves.
  • I reviewed the game back in 2020 on PS4 and absolutely adored it.
  • Sure it had some issues, such as oversexualizing the female characters in their cockpits and a few plot points I would have liked to see fleshed out a tad more, but in all honesty, the game is fantastic.

It only gets better the more you think about it, with a second playthrough having you notice much more of the foreshadowing. The game was originally planned to release on both a PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita, but we never got the latter version as the Vita was dead for quite a while at that point (RIP).

  3. The first thing I noticed on Switch was that the game did look noticeably worse in both portable and docked mode compared to PS4 Pro.

It’s not much of an issue here though, because the visual downgrade is purely in resolution when playing Adventure mode. There are fewer particle effects and post-processing in battles, but I find that actually makes things much easier to see. Then again, in portable mode enemies can be so small as to go unnoticed so it does have drawbacks. The visuals are essentially the only difference here, though I have to say being portable is a huge plus given how the game is easily played in small chunks. There’s no new content or control methods, which is a shame because touch would have been great for battles. 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim on Switch receives a small downgrade in resolution and effects, but is largely the same as its PS4 counterpart. The story is still incredible, and well worth experiencing multiple times.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is a 2019 video game developed by Vanillaware and published by Atlus, It was released for the PlayStation 4 in Japan in November 2019 and worldwide in September 2020, with a Nintendo Switch version released in April 2022. 13 Sentinels and The Search for Non-Binary Romance If you haven’t played Vanillaware’s 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim you should, before someone spoils it for you. It’s a unique game with a conceptual, puzzle-box storyline and fun if less focalized RTS combat.

  • In the game, you play as 13 different mech pilots leading up to the final battle against waves of kaiju, who are set to invade a mid ‘80s city in Japan.
  • Each of these characters’ individual storylines feel familiar, and intentionally so.
  • Most draw on Blockbusters of the past and popular anime.
  • Natsuno Minami, a sci-fi junkie and member of the track team, discovers a strange alien and decides to secretly house it despite a gaggle of government agents being on the lookout for it.

(So, E.T.) Megumi Yakushiji makes a contract with a talking cat only she can see, and has to violently subdue “witches” in exchange for her lover’s safety. (So she certainly must have been inspired by Madoka’ s Homura.) The story spans about a century’s worth of time, with some of the playable characters being refugees from both doomed pasts and futures.

  • Two characters, Keitaro Miura and Takatoshi Hijiyama, come from Pacific War era Japan and are teen conscripts in the Japanese Imperial Army.
  • Using the recently built Sakura High School as a base, a researcher named Professor Douji and his daughter, Kiriko Douji, were working on a project developing “sentinels,” the game’s take on giant robots.

Takatoshi soon learns Kiriko isn’t Professor Douji’s daughter, though, and that Kiriko isn’t her name. Her real name is Tsukasa Okino, who was assigned male at birth and donned a feminine disguise during his time in the ‘40s. All within Takatoshi’s prologue, he learns a great deal about one of the key members of 13 Sentinels’ supporting cast—Tsukasa is a pilot as well, and he was the creator of the sentinels in the first place. What makes Takatoshi’s storyline so interesting is that it isn’t much of a mystery at all, in comparison to the rest of the cast’s. Takatoshi’s story is a romance. Because of his association with Tsukasa, he already has most of the answers he needs to solve the puzzle.

You aren’t able to access most of Takatoshi’s story until much farther into the game, due to his proximity to one of the most mysterious key players. His story, instead, is about coming to terms with his queerness and contending with loving Tsukasa. This isn’t always easy, and isn’t handled perfectly.

Takatoshi often resists his feelings by lashing out and retreating into internalized homophobia. It’s a protracted arc that could have still been included with more rapid advancements in his vulnerability. That isn’t to say that Tsukasa isn’t a great character; in fact, he quickly became one of the standouts.

  • Other than being an engineering whiz, Tsukasa has a stoic sense of humor and loves messing with Takatoshi.
  • He teases him when he gets jealous (which he often does) and, at one point, is in a sexually dominant position while he analyzes Takatoshi’s emotions, realizing just how hot he is for Tsukasa.
  • Tsukasa, usually calm and collected, is occasionally thrown off-guard by Takatoshi’s soft affection—it’s often the one thing he failed to account for.

Later on, Takatoshi learns that in an alternate timeline, he and Tsukasa are actually a married couple happily in love. That Takatoshi beams with pride at his partner and is emotionally forthright about his dedication, something the Takatoshi we play as is never capable of doing.

The problem lies in how Takatoshi’s feelings are portrayed, and the cold feet the writing occasionally gets when addressing it. For much of the game, Takatoshi insists he can’t be in love with Tsukasa, because he’s a man. Takatoshi is a hall monitor type and rigid about rules, and also comes from a mostly real world 1940s Japan.

I wasn’t necessarily against Takatoshi unlearning his internalized homophobia as a narrative arc, but certain moments play into unfortunate transmisogynistic ideas of loving a queer bodied person. Jokes are often made about how riled Takatoshi gets when Tsukasa wears a girls’ school uniform, which increasingly happens even after Tsukasa abandons the Kiriko persona.

I enjoyed seeing Tsukasa casually enter a scene wearing one; it starts making less and less sense why he would be wearing that outfit other than the fact that he (or Takatoshi) enjoys it. What bothers me is foreplay centered on the mystery of Tsukasa’s genitals, and the coyness in which they portray Takatoshi’s preference for Tsukasa in womens’ clothing and his disinterest when he is dressed more masculinely.

You could easily read Takatoshi as bisexual (given he finds nearly every girl in the game cute), but the game fails to treat him as such and instead unwittingly paints his physical attraction to Tsukasa as fetishistic. Almost every character in 13 Sentinels is embroiled romantically with someone.

With a few exceptions, nearly every character is in a committed heterosexual relationship by the end. Things are still awkward between Tsukasa and Takatoshi. Tsukasa seems tepid to pursue it farther than flirtation, and Takatoshi is implied to be interested in a relationship with a female character he is rarely on screen with.

The reasoning for this is spoilery, but knowing context it’s even worse given the emphasis it gives on romance as necessarily leading to reproduction. It’s strange that, even in speculative fiction, finding an honest queer romance is so difficult—often these works are meant to critique structures and show the meaninglessness of modern life, so why prescribe so heavily to heterosexist performance? I wish Tsukasa and Takatoshi had kissed.

None of the straight couples in the game do either, but there’s something so powerful about being direct with a queer romance, especially in a game that isn’t targeted to a queer audience. Given Atlus’s history with homophobia, it’d send a great message to queer fans that they do have a place in their games.
